Machine vision cameras age like laboratory instruments, not like consumer electronics: no moving parts, sealed industrial housings, sensors rated for decades of operation. That is why refurbished cameras from de-installed production lines are a legitimate market rather than a gamble - and why popular models such as the MV-CU120-10GM or MV-CU060-10GM routinely trade second-hand at 25-40% below new. The savings are real, and so is the variance between a careful refurbisher and a pallet flipper. Here is the checklist that separates them.
1. Sensor surface
Dust is normal and cleanable; scratches on the sensor glass are not, and they show as permanent dark marks at small apertures. Inspect the sensor under a bright angled light with the lens removed. Ask the seller for this photo specifically - it is the single most revealing image in a refurb listing.
2. Shutter and sensor hours
Sensors track operating hours in firmware. A five-year-old camera with 800 hours (shift work, clean environment) is a bargain; 30,000 hours of 24/7 hot-characteristics operation is a different purchase. Global shutter sensors also accumulate shutter-related characteristics over extreme cycles - the honest refurbisher discloses operating history.
3. Mount and connector wear
C-mount threads that wobble, bent trigger pins, USB or M8 connectors that do not latch - each is evidence of rough handling and predicts intermittent faults. Threads should engage smoothly; connectors should click firmly.
4. Firmware and feature parity
Verify the firmware version and that it can be updated to current. Older firmware may lack features your software stack expects (Action Commands, specific pixel formats). A camera stuck on un-updatable firmware costs more than its discount.
5. Full parameter sweep, not a pretty picture
The test that matters: capture frames at minimum, mid and maximum exposure and gain; check every pixel format the datasheet promises; verify hardware trigger at line rate. A refurbisher who tests by "taking a photo of a desk" has not tested the camera.
6. Noise and hot pixels
At high gain and long exposure, count hot pixels and look at pattern noise. Aging sensors develop fixed-pattern artifacts that calibration can map out - but only if the seller provides or the software can generate the correction. A modest number of mappable hot pixels is normal; visible column noise is not.
7. Cosmetics, honestly weighted
Scratched housing paint affects nothing. Cracked housing, damaged mounting holes or bent lens flanges affect alignment - that is where cosmetics become function.
8. Accessories and cables
Industrial Ethernet and USB3 vision cables fail more often than cameras. Confirm what is included and price new cables into the comparison; a "camera only" deal approaches new-camera pricing once you add a quality locking cable and I/O harness.
9. Warranty terms, in writing
A refurb warranty should be real: 90 days to 6 months, covering sensor and electronics, with an RMA process. "Tested working, sold as-is" is not a warranty - it is a hope.
10. Fit to application, not to price
The last check is the one at the top: does this specific model, in this shutter type, at this sensor age, suit the task? A refurbished rolling-shutter 20 MP camera is superb value for a static inspection cell and a poor choice for a fast unstrobed conveyor. The discount never fixes a wrong specification.
