Monochrome vs Color Machine Vision Cameras: When Black-and-White Wins

On almost every industrial camera series, the same sensor ships twice: once as a monochrome version (the GM suffix in Hikrobot's naming) and once as a color version with a Bayer filter (the GC suffix). The color variant usually costs the same or slightly more, and buyers reach for it by default - "our parts are colored, so we need color." Often that reasoning is backwards, and it costs them real inspection performance.

What the Bayer filter actually costs you

A color sensor does not see color directly. It places a grid of red, green and blue filters over the pixels, so each pixel records only one color channel and the missing two are interpolated from its neighbors - a process called demosaicing. The consequences stack up:

You lose effective resolution. A "20 MP" color camera interpolates half its green data and all of its red and blue data. Fine detail that a mono sensor resolves cleanly at 20 MP gets smeared toward 10-14 MP of true detail, with telltale artifacts around edges - exactly where you look for defects.

You lose light. The filter layer absorbs photons before they reach the photodiode. Rule of thumb: a mono sensor carries roughly three times the signal of its color twin under identical lighting. That is the difference between a clean image at 30 us exposure and a noisy one, or between one light bar and three on a fast line.

You lose dynamic range headroom. Interpolation and channel crosstalk eat into the contrast separation between a subtle defect - a scratch, a dent, a missing mark - and the background surface.

Where monochrome is simply the right answer

Measurement and gauging: edge detection lives on clean intensity transitions, and demosaicing artifacts are edge noise. Dimensional inspection should be mono, nearly always.

Barcode and 2D code reading: codes are printed in single-contrast ink. Mono gives sharper edges and better sensitivity, which directly improves decode rates on damaged or low-contrast marks.

Surface defect inspection: scratches, dents, pits, contamination. These live in the geometry of light - brightfield and darkfield intensity contrasts - not in hue. The mono version of the same camera, for example the MV-CS200-10GM, will find a scratch the color MV-CS200-10GC has to guess at.

Presence/verification checks: is the part there, is the hole tapped, is the label present. Mono, every time, at lower cost.

Where color genuinely earns its place

Some information only exists in hue, and no amount of mono sensitivity will recover it. Wire and terminal color verification in harness assembly. Print inspection - checking the right ink, catching color drift or registration offset. Food and pharma sorting where ripeness, browning or contamination show as color. PCB inspection where color codes identify components. And if you are reading painted or anodized parts where the defect changes color, not just brightness, a color sensor may catch what mono cannot.

When you do go color, note that lighting color matters differently: white light is usually fine, but mono systems often gain from matching light wavelength to the defect (red light for dark plastics, blue for yellow surfaces) - a tuning freedom color systems give up.

A decision rule you can defend

Write down what information the inspection actually needs. If the defect or feature can be described in terms of shape, edge, contrast or brightness - choose mono and reinvest some of the effort in lighting, which returns more image quality per dollar than any sensor upgrade. Choose color only when you can point at a specific hue-based judgment the system must make. In eight years of reviewing inspection line specifications, the mono-to-color ratio on real production lines has stayed stubbornly around four to one. Your bill of materials probably should look similar.
